What is this book about?

A comedy about a free-spirited girl who courts experience and a man-about-town who agrees to become an unwed father. Sweetie Appleyard is a barefoot girl who disperses loose pages of poetry from her tree-top perch down upon the heads of startled passers-by. Her distressed father suspects Sweetie’s bizarre behavior stems from a childhood incident…an amorous but unsatisfactory episode in a coalbin. Chick Swallow, her old playmate, finds himself enlisted by Sweetie’s father to bring his daughter back to the world, and grapples manfully with the situation until the situation shows unmistakable signs of grappling him.
